Fall Update

Dear Parents,
Welcome to another great year at the Mesivta of Roslyn. Our students have acclimated beautifully to the Yeshiva schedule, and the sounds of learning and studying can be heard throughout the building. We are taking advantage of the great weather to play basketball on our outdoor court, and our gym program is already underway. It is especially rewarding to watch our new students as they make new friends and join the Mesivta family.

Although the school year has just begun, there is so much news and information to share with you. Our ninth grade’s orientation trip to New Roc City gave them the opportunity to develop the Achdus and Ruach that is such an important component of their development (not to mention sharpen their bowling, mini-golf and laser-tag skills!). The new tenth grade Rebbi, Rabbi Nachi Winter, has quickly formed a real relationship with his Talmidim and the entire student body. His dynamic and warm personality, as well as his dedication to our students, is clear in everything that he does. This year the eleventh grade Shiur has been divided into two groups, with Rabbi Laibel Rockove teaching one group, and our Rosh HaYeshiva, Rabbi Tzvi Kramer giving an enrichment Shiur. This will allow us to give them the personal attention and instruction necessary for their continued growth and development. Our Bais Midrash program, with Rabbi Rockove as the Mashgiach, is off to a great start, and the sound of learning can be heard well into the night. We encourage the Bais Midrash boys to be involved with the high school students through learning and recreation, and the friendships that they create are a significant part of our student’s growth.

I would like to share with you some exciting changes that have taken place in our General Studies Department. Our philosophy has always been to offer the tools and skills necessary for the success of our students. In order to reach even greater educational excellence, Dr. William Muller, a veteran principal of the Long Island public school system, has joined us as our Dean of Academics. Dr. Muller will be working closely with our teachers and staff to ensure effective delivery of the curriculum. In addition, he will serve as general advisor for the students, as well as oversee all extracurricular clubs and programs. We are confident that Dr. Muller’s experience and management skills, together with his ability to bring out the confidence and academic potential of each student, will greatly enhance the superior education that we offer.

One of our goals is to help our students develop strong social and leadership skills by exposing them to a variety of extracurricular programs and opportunities. Our Club Program is scheduled to begin after Sukkos, and we are actively working on new and exciting club ideas. In the upcoming week, each class will be appointing Class Representatives to be involved in organizing class activities and trips. In addition they will meet regularly to discuss Mesivta events and programs. This year we have developed an incentive based program called “The Phrase That Pays”. Every week students are given a phrase to memorize in both Hebrew and English, and if a student is chosen he can win a cash prize. It is not uncommon to see students standing in front of “The Phrase” poster during lunch or recess, as they commit it to memory. We are eager to initiate new ideas and programs, and your input is greatly appreciated.

As the Yomim Noraim are upon us, the entire Mesivta family wishes you a Shanah Tova U’Misukah, a good and sweet year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns that you may have. I look forward to getting acquainted with you as we work together to educate your child.

Sincerely,
Rabbi Zev Davidowitz
Menahel
